Who are the Missionaries of Charity?

Works of charity and service are not restricted to a particular religion, caste, or community. Mother Teresa having felt a strong religious call to serve the poor, worked passionately to alleviate the sufferings of the underprivileged and established the organization of the Missionaries of Charity. The MoC was founded in the 1950s by Mother along with a group of sisters, it began as a simple effort to serve those in need and thereafter, transformed into a profound foundation.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta also known as St. Teresa was an advocate and active missionary who worked for the betterment of society. Her earliest efforts to humanity were to ensure that those she tended to were given the respect and dignity that every human being rightfully deserves. Her love and service did not differentiate between the poor, rich, and members belonging to different faiths, communities, or castes.

·        Interfaith respect: The Missionaries of Charity is a religious congregation and follows the catholic order. Regardless of one’s faith and belief, the sisters serve every individual with utmost compassion and dedication, and they do not engage in proselytization.

·        Emphasis on prayers: Prayer and spiritual connection play an essential role in the life of the sisters of MOC. Mother Teresa believed in the power and sustenance one could get from prayers to sustain their commitment to their vocation, for guidance, strength, and stronger faith.

·        Joyful service: Despite the hardships and setbacks the Missionaries of Charity face, they are driven by a sense of fulfillment and purpose to serve the poor. They value joy in their service and their actions and efforts are purely genuine and wholehearted.
