Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity

The Order of the Missionaries of Charity is a catholic missionary organization, founded in the 1950s and is operational till today. Established by Mother Teresa as a humble effort to alleviate the sufferings of the poor, today it has grown to have several branches in India and all over the world.

To wholeheartedly serve the poor, the sick and the lonely was the mission of the sisters and they have strived to do the same till this day.

Mother Teresa is known to be a great humanitarian and passionate missionary who spread the love of God by tending to those living in extreme poverty and severe conditions. How are the funds utilized by the Missionaries of Charity?

The members of the Missionaries of Charity maintain transparency regarding the utilization of their funds. Mostly voluntary funding from individuals, other organizations, the government, and from abroad helps the sisters to run the organization.

The donations received are used in various ways, to provide food, shelter, clothing, basic medical facilities, and education to those residing in homes, orphanages, and hospices. It is also used to maintain the staff and fund the numerous initiatives and projects that are undertaken.

However, it is important to note that the MOC does not have a Mother Teresa Trust or any trust fund dedicated to their efforts, those who wish to help reach out to them directly.

Sources of donations of the MOC

·        Individual donations: This forms their biggest source of income as people from anywhere around the world, regardless of their faith, caste, age, or occupation., can contribute to the MOC directly. These people can be regular donors or donate as a one-time gift.

·        Government donations: In some situations, the Missionaries of Charity may receive grants from the government for their various projects and initiatives. However, their main source of donations is from individuals.

·        Organizations: Various schools, churches, organizations, charities, institutions, etc. can donate to the MOC and their orphanages. This can be both through cash or kind such as clothes, food hampers, food grains, essential items such as toiletries, sanitary napkins, baby food, etc.

·        Fundraising events: Some branches of the MOC such as the homes or orphanages sometimes host fundraising events to raise funds. 

Conclusion

Mother Teresa's legacy, along with her compassion and charisma is carried on by those continuing her work. This includes both the sisters and members of the MOC and volunteers who offer their time and skills to improve the residents of the homes and orphanages.

The sisters of the MOC are simple, humble, and strong women, they are detached from materialism and lead simple lives. They do not keep huge reserves for themselves but instead, make proper use of their resources to provide for the marginalized communities. Their efforts and hard work contribute greatly to many lives and have helped countless people find joy in living.
