The Order of the Missionaries of Charity

The Order of the Missionaries of Charity is a roman catholic organization, founded by Mother Teresa in the 1950s. This congregation is dedicated to serving and caring for the poorest of the poor and alleviating the sufferings of marginalized communities.

The Missionaries of Charity aimed to provide the very basic amenities and dignity that people living in and below the poverty line are denied. A healthy living, access to basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and medicines, and respect in society, are not given to the less fortunate communities. This condition has improved over the years but has not been dealt with completely. Mother Teresa herself, left her job as a teacher to cater to the children living in the slums. So, she could provide them with better facilities.

For what purpose do people visit the Missionaries of Charity?

The MOC is run by Mother Teresa’ssisters, these women form the nucleus of the organization and carry out all the various responsibilities and tasks. To contribute to the Missionaries of Charity, one does not need to be a nun, priest, or clergy, both volunteers and other organizations can help by giving their time or skills.

·       Helping those in need: The primary group of people seeking help for the MOC are those living in slums, the poor, orphans, abandoned, helpless elderly, and the terminally ill. They are mostly those without support and don't have anyone to rely on. They are provided with necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, etc, and are either sent to homes or orphanages based on how to cater to them specifically.

·       Volunteering: Individuals wish to contribute and help out by either dedicating their time or skills. This does not only have to be in the form of teaching children and teenagers but can also be by helping with chores, playing with the children and engaging them in creative activities, offering companionship and time to the elderly, etc.

·       Finding vocation: Some women who would like to find out about their vocation or if they are confused about the same can approach the sisters of the Missionaries of Charity. They can live with the sisters and find out for themselves if being a nun, is what their religious calling is.

Conclusion

The legacy and vision of the Mother Teresa, is carried on by the sisters of Mother Teresa. They take their vocation very seriously and dedicate their lives to serving and caring for those in need of love and care.

Mother Teresa rightfully believed that every individual in society, deserves a life of dignity and to have their basic needs fulfilled. She worked selflessly and passionately for her vision to come true and today, there are over 130 branches of the MOC globally.
