Mother Teresa’s Sisters

The sisters of the Missionaries of Charity have a very rich and inspiring history, it is filled with their milestones of selfless service, compassion, and dedication to the poor and the lonely. The Missionaries of Charity was founded by Mother Teresa in 1950. She began her journey with a small group of sisters, consisting of 12 companions. Mother Teresa was a catholic nun from Albania, she felt a strong religious call at the age of 12 and wished to dedicate her life to God.

Mother Teresa’s Sisters quickly spread from a small number of twelve to a lot more through word-of-mouth and a lot of women from different communities and backgrounds were drawn to her. The humble works of the sisters have been recognized and awarded often, including the Nobel Peace Prize for Mother Teresa in 1979.

It was in 1965 that the Missionaries of Charity received recognition as a Pontifical Congregation from the Pope. This allowed them to have a global reach and open homes and centers in over 133 countries globally, due to this they could address diverse needs such as disaster relief, conflicts, poverty, etc.

A great many orphanages and children’s homes, followed by disaster relief advocacies, hospitals, hospices, schools, and vocational training centers have been built in regions such as Africa, Europe, Oceania, Asia, and America. Mother Teresa’s Sisters have contributed to her legacy and good work from all over the world, the dedicated sisters maintain a humble lifestyle despite their global reach. These Sisters maintain a simple and autonomous structure, each of their local communities operates independently under the guidance of a Sister Superior. A strong relationship of sisterhood and love is found among them and they overcome their struggles together.
