Organizations begun by Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, also known as St. Teresa, was a catholic missionary who established the
religious organization of the Missionaries of Charity. Founded in the year 1950 by Mother along with
her group of sisters, the MoC aimed to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and to tend to the
orphaned, unwanted, abandoned, and lonely.
What began as a humble effort to uplift the marginalized communities soon transformed into
something bigger with numerous Mother Teresa organizations in many parts of Kolkata and India.
Over time, many were inspired by this and people all over the globe, including nuns along with
clergies and lay people started contributing to the Missionaries of Charity. Today, the MoC has
branches in about 130 countries, working independently and in collaboration with other
organizations.

Official branches within the Missionaries of Charity

The Missionaries of Charity have two official branches within the organization, created for
distinction between the sisterhood and the brotherhood for their smooth functioning and
operations.

The Lay Missionaries of Charity (LMC)

The Lay Missionaries of Charity was founded by Mother Teresa and Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala in 1984.
It was formed for the lay people who wished to be a part of the Mother Teresa organization of the
MoC and contribute to it in their way. It is open to all lay men and women, married couples and
widows who want to live in the charism of Mother Teresa and offer their humble services to the
poor.
They can do so by offering their skills, knowledge, and time to their local communities, to tend and
care for the poor, orphaned, and the unwanted who require food, shelter, and other basic
amenities. These members of the MoC are not required to live communally, they live independently
with their families and remain dedicated to their duties.

Corpus Christi Movement for Priests

The Corpus Christi Movement was established by Mother Teresa in Calcutta in 1979. This
organization aims to strengthen the priestly vocation among the diocesan priests and seminarians
and promote holiness and a strong sense of brotherhood. The focus of this branch is to offer services
to the poor and lonely, through prayers and personal sacrifices.
Members remain under the jurisdiction of their respective bishops and unlike other branches, it is
not mandatory for them to live communally or take formal vows.

Conclusion

Lay people who wish to contribute and be a part of the Missionaries of Charity can do so by
volunteering and donating, they are not required to be a part of either of the branches.
