Who is Mother Teresa of Calcutta?

Mother Teresa also known as St. Teresa of Calcutta was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje,
Ottoman Empire, in 1910, she was a humble missionary who lived a remarkable life dedicated to
serving the needy and the poor. Known worldwide for her merciful works and selfless service to
those in need, she has inspired millions and established numerous homes, hospices, and orphanages
to help those in need.

At the early age of 12, Mother felt a strong call towards religious life, while on a journey. Unknown
to her, it was a huge pivotal point in her life that completely transformed her and her contributions
to society. Her journey began with a small group of sisters, together with them she founded the
Missionaries of Charity, a religious organization of Mother Teresa.

What you might not know about Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa is recognized globally for her outstanding contributions to humanity, her dedicated
service, and her love for marginalized communities and the unfortunate, which led to the
establishment of various branches of the Missionaries of Charity in about 130 countries. However,
while many are aware of her as a missionary figure, we might not know enough about the inspiring
woman behind the image.

Mother was known to be a woman of linguistic talent, as she spoke about 5 languages fluently,
including Serbian, English, and Bengali. As she lived in a diverse city that had Bulgarian, Albanian,
and Turkish influences, she developed an appreciation for various languages, cultures, and
communities. Her love for the same encouraged her to embrace everyone and love them equally.
Beyond her strict and serious appearance, she was an extremely jolly and social person. Mother
thoroughly enjoyed adding humor wherever appropriate and possible, and had a playful and positive
demeanor.

Mother Teresa was a literature enthusiast and a poet lover, she appreciated fine literary works and
beautiful poems. She was particularly drawn to themes of spirituality and religion.

What made Mother Teresa a woman of caliber and inspiration, is her extremely strong
determination, willpower, and commitment. She had to face many setbacks and obstacles when she
wished to establish the Mother Teresa organization of the MoC, however, she did not let anything
affect her goal and struggled fearlessly to do what was right.

She was remarkably religious but not a fanatic, she realized that practicality and logic were non-
negotiables, and consulted with the right individuals whenever she needed to make a strong
decision, begin something or undertake a project, etc.

Conclusion

Mother Teresa has various unique and positive aspects that we might not be aware of, her personal
talents and what she constitutes as an individual, got overshadowed by her public image. By viewing
who she was from various perspectives, we can gain a better understanding of the woman behind
the image, her legacy, and her true goal in life.

Enriched by her wisdom and love for others, many have contributed to the Missionaries of Charity
and other establishments either with their time, skills, and knowledge or by donating to the Mother
Teresa trust. The funds and contributions are efficiently used to provide necessary resources to
homes and orphanages for their proper operation and functioning.
