Volunteer Contribution to the Missionaries of Charity

The Missionaries of Charity is one of the most well-known of all the organizations established by Mother Teresa. In the very early years of Mother Teresa's service to the poor and marginalized communities, the Order of the Missionaries of Charity was but a small group of women, who taught and looked after children residing in the surrounding slums. Over time, with relentless dedication and a larger support system, Mother Teresa of Calcutta founded the MOC.

The MOC is a religious Catholic Congregation for women, founded in the 1950s and today it has over 130 branches worldwide. The organization is run by nuns who operate according to the hierarchical structure within, however, volunteers who wish to contribute to the homes and orphanages, are most welcome to do so.

What do volunteers do in the Missionaries of Charity?

People from all over the globe, who are aware of Saint Teresa and her works of charity are very passionate about visiting the Missionaries of Charity, located in the Taltala area of Kolkata. This is where the legacy of Mother Teresa of Calcutta began and it holds an important significance.

Individuals who volunteer in the MOC usually visit the Mother House in the mornings, they join the nuns for a prayer service and breakfast, this is how they begin their day. Volunteers arrive in huge numbers and are divided into groups based on the crowd. Then these groups are taken all over the city to the various homes, hospices, and orphanages that were opened by Mother Teresa, some of them include- Shanti dan, Prem Dan, Shishu Bhavan, Nirmal Hridhay, Hansen's leprosy center, and many more.

Each group spends most of their day in the home or orphanage they are visiting and usually volunteers by helping with chores or any other tasks, the nuns and other staff members have a mammoth task of providing for and tending to hundreds of members residing in the homes. A helping hand helps in the efficient completion of most responsibilities and it is greatly appreciated. Volunteers also engage in playful activities with the children and teenagers while being hearty company to the elderly.
