Missionaries of Charity and Mother Teresa’s sisters

The Order of the Missionaries of Charity is a religious congregation that was formed by Saint Teresa in Calcutta. The main headquarters is located in the Taltala area of Kolkata, India, and is operated by the sisters of Mother Teresa. This grand and successful organization began as a small initiative by a group of 12 sisters and has currently expanded to 139 branches worldwide.

It was Mother Teresa’s charity and vocation that encouraged her to pursue her vision, and her charisma and dedication drew hundreds of women who were inspired by her actions. The MOC is based on a strong foundation of values, morals, and beliefs, which distinguish this organization from others and guide them to stay true to their mission.

Core Values of the Missionaries of Charity

The core values of an institute help uphold the standard and guide all actions and operations according to the said values. These values were established by Mother Teresa and are held central to the mission of the MOC. Let us take a look at what they are:

 ·   Serving the poorest of the poor: The primary focus of the sisters is to offer their services to the poor, abandoned, and the sick, those who have been neglected and outcast from society. Indian society has progressed but only to a certain extent, the earliest initiative made by Mother Teresa was by opening the Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy) Centre to cater to those suffering from leprosy.

·   Respect for all: Irrespective of caste, creed, color, community, and faith every individual is deserving of respect and dignity. The MOC emphasizes the importance of respecting every person and giving them their deserving place in society.

·    Dignity and compassion: They strive to serve those in need with wholehearted compassion and dignity. Both the physical and spiritual needs of a person are addressed to provide them with enlightenment, care, and strong support.

·   A life of simplicity: The sisters of the Missionaries of Charity lead a very simple life and are detached from materialism. They live a life following God by taking the four vows of the Congregation; poverty, chastity, obedience, and wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor.

·    Devotion to God: The MOC is a catholic religious order and their service and compassion stems from their faith, vocation, and devotion to God.

The values that the sisters of Mother Teresa follow are reflected in their service, actions, and behavior, which include running orphanages for children, homes for the sick, elderly, and children, hospices, homeless centers, and food kitchens.

Summary

The Missionaries of Charity is a result of Mother Teresa’s charity and selfless devotion to God and the poor. The values, beliefs, and morals of Mother Teresa are embodied by the members of the organization and are readily reflected in their works.
